Fun and Popular Konglish Expressions You Should Know!

Once again, I’ve brought some interesting and frequently used Konglish expressions to share! Sometimes, I mistakenly use Konglish as if it were real English when talking to my foreign friends. Surprisingly, there are moments when they understand what I mean right away! When this happens, it’s fascinating because it proves that a new way of expressing something can be effective, even if it’s the first time someone’s heard it. That’s why I think learning about variations of English influenced by different languages can be so much fun!

Let’s dive into today’s examples!

Bike

오토바이 (Auto Bike)

A bicycle that moves on its own?

In Korea, “오토바이” refers to a motorized two-wheeled vehicle, or what we’d call a motorcycle in English. The term is a Konglish version of “auto bike.” At first, someone unfamiliar with it might find it confusing. But once you understand the meaning, doesn’t it click right away?

저는 오토바이로 출근해요. (I ride a motorcycle to work.)

셀프 (Self)

In Korea, “셀프” is widely used to mean doing something by yourself. You’ll often see it in phrases like “셀프 주유소” (self-service gas station) or “물은 셀프” (water is self-serve).

In English, the word “self” usually appears with modifiers, like in self-service or self-taught. Without context, it might confuse native speakers.

물은 셀프입니다. (Water is self-serve.)

리모컨 (Remote Controller)

“리모컨” is the Korean abbreviation for “remote controller.” It’s used for devices like TVs and air conditioners, just like how “에어컨” is short for air conditioner.

리모컨 좀 주세요. (Please hand me the remote.)

베프 (Best Friend)

“베프” is a uniquely Korean abbreviation for “best friend.” It’s a casual and endearing way to refer to a close friend, particularly popular among younger people. Koreans have a knack for creating abbreviations, even with English words!

우리는 베프예요. (We’re besties!)

It’s always fun exploring how languages evolve and mix, especially when it leads to unique expressions like these. What Konglish phrases do you use or find interesting? 😊
